Bethel Park named a 2026 Best Community for Music Education by NAMM Foundation

The Bethel Park School District has again been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation, recognizing its outstanding commitment to music education.

Now in its 27th year, the designation is awarded to districts nationwide that demonstrate exceptional achievement in providing music access and education to all students.

To earn the recognition, the district submitted detailed information on funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making opportunities. The data was reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“We’re honored to once again be recognized as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education,” said Superintendent Dr. James Walsh. “This designation reflects the passion and commitment of our students, the expertise of our music educators, and the unwavering support of our community. Music is an essential part of a well-rounded education in Bethel Park, and we’re proud to see the impact of that commitment recognized on a national level. Our faculty and students continue to set a high standard for excellence, and this honor is a testament to their dedication.”

Each year, NAMM awards two designations: the Best Communities for Music Education for school districts and the SupportMusic Merit Award for individual schools. Bethel Park is among just 1,000 public, private, charter, and parochial school districts and school sites nationwide to earn the honor in 2026.

Music is a core part of the district’s whole-child educational philosophy. Beginning in elementary school and continuing through high school, students are encouraged to explore creativity, collaborate with peers, and build skills that support academic and personal growth.

Instrumental music, including band and strings, is available to Bethel Park students starting in fourth grade. At Neil Armstrong and Independence Middle Schools (grades 5–8), all students may participate in choir, orchestra, or band, alongside a required general music curriculum that deepens their understanding of music theory, history, and performance. Composing and improvising are key components that help develop both creativity and musical literacy.

The middle school years are especially important for musical development, as students begin to form a lasting personal connection to the music they study and perform. Exposure to diverse styles and traditions fosters critical thinking and cultural awareness—skills that are increasingly valuable in a global society.

At Bethel Park High School, the program continues to grow, offering electives such as Music Technology, Songwriting, and AP Music Theory. Students also have opportunities to perform in ensembles, including Orchestra, Band, and Choir, as well as audition-based groups such as Top 21, Symphonic Band, and Chamber Orchestra.

The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 15,000 member companies and professionals. The foundation promotes active participation in music-making through scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs.
